A word about add on cachets:
Uncacheted First Day Covers that have an added cachet is usually called an “add-on” cachet.  These are done after the stamp has been issued – usually several years later.  This cachet can be either hand painted – hand colored, computer generated,  rubber stamp ink, sticker added or even printed on a press.  However created, the cachet “enhances” the cover and uaually makes it quite attractive.  These add on cachets are usually done in very small quantities and thus are really quite scarce!  The value of an add on cachet FDC is simply determined by the market place – what one will buy.  Many artists are now painting cachets on older issues and have quite a following.  Auction prices can be quite high!  Even a new issue can have an add-on cachet!
A FIRST DAY COVER is simply the envelop, stamp affixed to the cover, and the special first day cancel.  Stamps cancelled before 1937 often do not have the FIRST DAY OF ISSUE 4 bar cancel.  They just have the proper issue date from the first day city.  Refer to any FDC catalog to get the exact issue dates for these cover to be sure you are getting an old FDC.The cachet really is optional to the First Day Cover.
But generally most collectors desire a cachet.  There have been many dealers in First Day Covers and cachet types are easily identified.  Examples are: Artcraft, Artmaster, Anderson etc.  However add-on cachets may or may not be identified by the cachet maker.  They may be hard to identify if a logo or other identifying mark is not present.  But regardless of the maker, they are genuine First Day Covers and very collectable.Having a stock of well over 100,000 FDCs, you can see both regular FDCs and add on cachets offered here on ebay.  I enjoy ebay and hope that collectors will enjoy some of my covers.  Happy bidding- and thanks as always.
